.gifs no longer animated since upgrade

I upgraded to IE 6 & suddenly, no more gif animation. It works in XP, but
not in my browser window, which is Explorer. This is somewhat problematic,
as I maintain our company website & the webpage gifs aren't functional for
me. They work for others in their browsers, but apparently, not in MY
browser. I did visit other gif pages to ensure it wasn't just our website.

How do I fix this, and how do I ensure it doesn't happen with the next
upgrade? I've set my pc to do auto-updates.

Went to the link provided, but even tho' I followed each & every suggestion
(rebooting after each adjustment), I still have no active gif images. Dumped
every dumpable file, etc. Checked my firewall settings (in fact, shut my
firewalls OFF temporarily to see if that helped), but still no luck. I think
I've tried everything except a system restore or a reinstall of IE ... is
that what I'm facing??

HI kellybs :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

IE>Internet Options>Advanced tab>Multimedia section>
Check "Play animations in webpages"
Click Apply>OK out.

Try Doug Knox's script utility:
http://www.dougknox.com/utility/scripts_desc/fixpix.htm

or…...

Go to Start>Run and type in the window:
regsvr32.exe /i shdocvw.dll (all versions of IE) ... and then hit enter
then type in
regsvr32.exe /i shdoc401.dll (IE5 upwards)

If using WindowsME the command is:

regsvr32.exe /i thumbvw.dll

You should soon see a *succeeded* dialogue box after each command.
Click ok, and then reboot

Hope this helps :-)

Hi Jan Il -

Followed all your instructions, but still no luck. When I did the
following: "regsvr32.exe /i shdoc401.dll" I was told it failed, unable to
locate.... etc. Also, Doug Knox's script is not for use with XP, which is my
o/s.

I had already dumped, cleared & emptied everything possible, as well as
double-checking that all my animations, etc. options were checked. I
confirmed that my antivirus wasn't the problem, and I checked my firewall
(turned it off, in fact, to see if that was the issue). Nothing.

What now? sigh..........

Hi kellybs :-)

Unless you have a 3rd party ad or popup blocker or other software that is
blocking the animation, you might try a reapir of IE.

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378/EN-US/
Be sure to visit Windows Update site and let it scan for all needed updates
and service packs afterward.

Also, if you have SpywareBlaster or other such programs, check the blockers
for any that might block animation. Check your security settings.

Hope this helps :-)

shdoc401.dll is only used in Win9x and NT4 with WDU.
(Other OS including XP have the enhanced Shell already integrated
in shell32.dll. That's why they can register it while earlier OS
can't.)

Simplest repair for XPsp2 is Run... iexplore.exe /rereg

If that's not enough there are additional registrations given
in KB831429 for W2K which apply equally to XP. (e.g. NT5x)

BTW does your Search Companion animated character move? <eg>

<title>KB307851 - HOW TO: Turn Off, Display, and Select an Animated Character in Search Companion in Windows XP</title>

Also a McAfee product has recently been associated with a symptom
of high CPU utilization. Use Task Manager to check that you don't
have any processes which are taking most of the cycles.

Thanks for your response, Robert. I did the run.... iexplore.exe /rereg but
not sure if anything happened. There wasn't any notification of success or
any kind of response at all.

For the record, my .gifs all work fine UNTIL I'm on the internet. Then
nothing. My search companion wags his tail, etc. as usual. When I'm working
on my website, all .gifs are fully functional. It's only after I upload the
files to the 'net & go to the website to view the changes that I have no
animation. It works on my office PC, but not on my home PC. And it's not
just my website - it's all .gif images that aren't animated.

I think I'm stuck either reinstalling internet explorer, or doing a system
restore. I've tried absolutely everything else!

Thanks, everyone, for all the attempts to get this fixed.

WOOHOO! No idea why, but out of the blue, those dang .gifs started waving
their arms & shakin' their tailfeathers! So many thanks, Robert - whatever
you told me to do & I did, worked. Thanks also to everyone else who gave me
their valuable insight & suggestions. Seems I'm back in business. ;-)
