PPT 2002, like to use with 2003 viewer
I've downloaded an animated GIF file from the internet, an
would like it to show once, or twice, or stop every once in a while
However, it just keeps on repeating, while I'd like to look at i
stopped
From checking the archives, I've found that there is a BUG in PP
that it repeats an animated GIF one less time than the GIF is programe
for. I'm totally GIF illiterate (otherwise)
Any suggestions?

Think of a GIF as an animated cartoon. It's made up of a bunch of copies of
an image. Each copy has been modified slightly, so that when they are
displayed in rapid succession it appears that there is movement. The files
has some header information that tells the system how fast to display the
images and how many times to repeat the process - - it can be repeat XX
times or "loop continuously".

PowerPoint 97 and 2000 had a bug that ignored the number of repeats and just
looped eternally. PowerPoint 2002 was fixed and doesn't do that, but it
still has a bug. If the GIF says "play once", PowerPoint 2002 is okay. If
the GIF says "play XX times", PowerPoint 2002 will play it XX - 1 times.

Your GIF must have been coded to repeat continuously, i.e. loop. You can
open the file in a trial version of GIF Construction Set
(http://www.mindworkshop.com/) or Animation Shop (http://www.jasc.com/) and
open your file and change the repeat factor. Then re-save it. So, if you
want it to play 6 times, for PowerPoint 2002 you should set it to repeat 5
times. <G>

I got one detail backwards. If you want it to repeat 5 times, set it to
repeat 6 times.
