Greetings to the group.

I have been using Microsoft Anti-Spyware since it was released to the
public. Everything was working fine until about 10 days ago. Since then I
cannot download any updates since #5682, manually or automatically, because
of a program error that is reported as follows:

"GIANTAntiSpywar.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You
will need to restart the program."

"An error log is being created." (no log of these crashes is ever created)

This error message appears just as the updater begins to download the
current definitions, or when it searches for them, usually within 5 seconds
of my clicking on File > Check for updates.

By the time I click OK the main program disappears from my desktop. I have
tried using the Update feature in Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, to no
avail. I have tried rebooting into safe mode with networking, to no avail.
Automatic updates also fail with the same popup message. I have uninstalled
and reinstalled the program several times. Once I was able to keep it
working long enough to get the last January definition update.

I am using Windows 2000 Professional, legally licensed, with SP4, and all
critical patches and updates applied. I temporarily reassigned myself to the
Administrators Group to try to resolve this problem. I was operating as a
Power User when I first installed the program (using RunAs Administrator).

The error.log in the Anti-Spyware directory does not record any information
about the crashes of the GIANT Updater (strange), so it is of no use. Here
are the only entries in the error log, despite ten consecutive crashes while
trying to manually update it:
" 7::ln 10:Out of memory::gcasDtServ:ScheduleScans:Update::2/9/2005 12:10:37
AM:1.0.501 "
" 7::ln 10:Out of memory::gcasDtServ:ScheduleScans:Update::2/9/2005 2:00:16
AM:1.0.501 "

I'll be most grateful for any assistance in t-shooting this update crash
problem.

BTW: I have already secured the box. I have and regularly update and scan
with Ad-Aware Personal Edition SE, Spybot S&D, SpywareBlaster, AVG
Anti-Virus, Norton AV 2004, Kerio Personal Firewall 2.15, a D-Link DI-604
Firewall router with NAT, and I use Firefox for most of my surfing, except
when I need IE for Windows Updates. My IE security for most zones is secured
to paranoia levels.
