Ghosting HD Software

Looking for a free if possible software to ghost my hard drive on to an external hdd as a back up.
If my hard drive in 1TB but only using 500GB could i ghost it to a 750GB external hard drive?
Or does it need to be the same size etc??

The HD manufacturers have 'tools' that will do what you want. :)
