Somehow I have old pages of my website showing up online that are from
a previous version. These are pages that are named differently than
those in my latest version and should have been replaced by the newest
verions. I cannot find these pages on my computer. Search engines
are directing people to these ghost pages which is causing problems
for my company. How do I delete them?

Once a search engine has indexed a page, the page is not removed from the search engine when you
delete the page. You should have tried to keep the old page names with the new content or re-create
pages with the old names, that re-direct to the new page names.

Huh, I would have thought when a page was re-spidered, the obsolete
pages would be removed from whatever's database.

That does not happen immediately. If it did, web sites that go down for
an hour would lose all their search engine ranking because the spider
turned up when the site was down. Googlebot is still looking for pages
I removed 2 years ago - and I have 301 redirects in place.

One additional problem is links on other websites to those pages - the
search engines spider those other websites, and follow those links ...
Potential customers find those links on the other websites as well.
