Ghost of a former network card won't go away!

I have a CNET PRO200WL network adapter (Dell computer) in an XP Pro system.

I used to run ICS and thus I also had a D-Link DE-528 network card.

That is no longer in the computer and is not listed in the Device Manager.
I booted into Safe Mode and did not find it listed in the Device Manager.

Yet, when I run Network Diagnostics, it reports on the card as "FAILED"

Where would the reference to this card still be hanging around my computer?
I searched the driver/ETC folder and the INF folder with no luck ...

I attach a small bit of the Network Diagnostics output if that helps.

Thanks,

Paul

Have a read of this:

Device Manager Does Not Display Devices That Are Not
Connected to the Windows XP-Based Computer
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315539

You might like to use this article to force Device Manager to show the
nonpresent devices.
The nonpresent ghosts should now reveal themselves.
You could then delete the nonpresent network adapters from device manager.

Wow, I never found that KB item on "showing devices that aren't there" ;)

My sincere thanks ... that has solved a number of problems that the "ghost"
network card had created for me over the last year.
