Hello,

I have a bit of a problem on my hands and rather hoped somebody could advise
me. Our nt 4 server developed a motherboard problem and we had to purchase
another server. The only backup I had was a ghost image, which I applied and
now receive a BOD on boot up. The error message refers to HAL.DLL.

I was thinking of installing NT over the top by using the update option and
not a new installation. It is imperative that I do not lose any of the
software on it, especially the sybase database program. Does anybody know
exactly what files are replaced during an "over the top" installation. I am
hoping that the HAL.DLL file will be replaced with my comps current
hardware.

any advice will be appreciated.

Cheers

John

Is the replacement server the same hardware as the old one? I doubt it since
the HAL.DLL is the library dealing with the "Hardware Abstraction Layer".

The only safe way to use that Ghost image is to put it on another server
identical to the old one. Since you have the backup it can't hurt to install
on the new stuff and do a re-install/repair install but watch it closely.

Not easy with NT4. If you got pass the HAL problem you would almost
certainly got "Inaccessible boot device" as the HDD controller is no doubt
different too.

As you've got a ghost image you can play. Try installing NT4 as an upgrade
and then re-applying SP6 or SP6H. Depending on the HDD controller of your
new motherboard it may be a simple process. If not then post here again.

Consider adding a new extra hard drive to your new server and install NT
onto the new drive. Then simply attach your old data-rich HD and mount it.
