I have three machines with three different platforms on my home LAN. The
newest is an XP. Recently, I changed the workgroup name of the oldest by
simply right-clicking to Properties and changing the name. All machines took
the change without incident.

However, when I look at My Network on the XP machine, I not only find the
machines I should but a forth as well; "Unknown". It gives descpritions of a
C and D drive on this machine ... which bears the old description of the one
I changed.

1) Why is this registering this way?
2) How do I get rid of it?

Hello John
Here is a paste I plagiarized from Mr. Steve Winograd.

*Go to My Network Places on the other computers and remove (right click
and delete) shortcuts to shared disks and folders on that computer.
That computer might continue to appear in "View workgroup computers",
but it will automatically go away after a time.*

I'm not sure I unstand, yellowpike (Candian?). I went to the other machines
and thet're network groups look perfect. If I unclicked them, I'm be
preventing them from being shared and I don't think that's what you mean.

I went back to the XP machine when I see this "ghost" and found these two
lisings under the old name of the machine I changed:

c on Main Office (under "Comments" is \\server\c; under "Computer" is
Unknown)
d on Main Office (same as above)

The 1st listing is preceded by a folder icon. When I click I get a message
tellin me the path is in error. (Of course. It no longer exists.)

The 2nd listing is preceded by what looks like a document icon. When I click
that... nothing happens.

If all this will simply go away within a few days, I'll just wait. But I am
awfully curious about what's goin' on. This XP system is only 2 months old
to me and there's lots I haven't read about. (Hate those damn icons in the
folder and file lists but can't make go away perminently... even when I
click Detail view.)

(Buffalo NY. considered by some as a Canadian city by default ;) )
Right click and delete the ghost shares in My Network Places.
Try a reboot on all 3 machines, that may help speed things along.
From My Network Places, click View workgroup computers.
What's listed ?
