I think my system is haunted.
It all started a few days ago when I got the hair-brained idea that I
would add more storage to my system via a new harddrive attached to a
promise 100 card. (Mistake 1)
So I put the card in, and connect the hard drive to the end of the
cable, only, except that when I plug the other end into the card, I do
it backwards. (Mistake 2) I guess I just didn't look close enough, but
the dang thing went in!
So I start up my system and the 2 Rom (DVD playback + dvd burner)
drives on the secondary channel are no longer "seen" in Windows
explorer. (My 2 harddrives ARE seen OK) They're GONE tho still
attached and humming away. Instead there is now only one drive on the
secondary channel named AVX CD/DVD-ROM SCSI CDRom Device.
Yikes! Where the heck did that come from? So I email Promise support
(mistake 3) no answer.
So I take a second look in my box and sure enough I see the cable
plugged in backwards. At this point I just wanna simplify things, so I
pull the new drive and the promise card and even the my two Rom drives
and restart. Everything seems to be working OK.
In the meanwhile I get myself a newer DVD player and install it as
master on the secondary channel and reboot. Sequence shows the new
DVDPlayer there. Then Windows starts and ... what the heck is this?
Windows tells me that it has found AVX CD/DVD-Rom SCSI CdRom Device!!!
I check in device manager and sure enough, there are two CDRoms
listed, my new Sony DVD playback and this "GHOST" drive. I check its
properties and it says the device is working properly, etc etc. When I
click on its icon, it keeps telling me to insert disk.
Easy solution ... right? ... just go to device manager and uninstall
it. Wrong. Although I do that, the same old thing happens, this ghost
drive re-appears. I tried uninstalling it via properties too, but it
reappears.
I'll bet nobody out there has had THIS kinda ghostly problem.
