I'm hoping someone can help me here please.
I'm using XPHome + SP1 and the 0680 Ultra ATA controller card. I have 2
Maxtor drives one each on primary and secondary channels on the card,
set as NTFS. CPU is an XP1700+ running at 1750mhz with 512mb RAM. This
works OK with Drive Image 2002 except transfer rates are only about
200mb/min. I have now got Ghost 2003 in order to try to see if I can
better this rate but when I select a partition to image I get a message
about firewire and USB printer needing attention. It doesn't seem to
seeing the destination drive (I tried DVD and as file on partition on
second disc) but no joy.
I'm wondering if I need extra drivers for the Sil0680 card? In advanced
settings I did an auto check for ASPI drivers which were not found, but
I thought XP already had them? Do I need to add these?
Thanks for any help.

The ST Lab card with the Sil0680 chip is a piece of shit. So if you bought
the ST LAB version, try to take it back now, and get something else. If you
can't return it, the following info may help you:

DOS DRIVERS:

Ghost will only run slowly (200MB/sec instead of 2,000MB/sec)
until you load the DOS driver in the CONFIG.SYS file.

The DOS driver for ST LAB PCI ATA 133 IDE controller card is
called "SII680.SYS". I put the file into the A:\ folder on my ghost boot
floppy added a line to load it in the CONFIG.SYS file (more info below).

I got the "SII680.SYS" file from the DOS boot disk on the
SiliconImage website (http://www.siliconimage.com) for the
680 controller chip. The "CONFIG.SYS" file on that boot disk
had the following line to load the driver:

device=sii680.sys /D /E /A

The above information is only relevant to DOS partitions. There are
other drivers for Win98, WinXP, etc.

DRIVE DETECTION DELAY IN BIOS AT BOOT TIME
------------------------------------------

I tested the delay caused by the card at boot time:

No Drives - 7 secs
One HDD on Primary Master or Slave - 7 secs
One CDROM on PrimaryMaster - 16 secs!!!

KNOWN PROBLEMS WITH THE ST LAB CARD
-----------------------------------

* Ghost runs slow unless the options shown above are used with
the driver
* standard IDE cables won't fit on the card because they hit the
adjoining PCI card
* Motherboard Monitor crashes when you first boot WinXP to
install the ST Lab WinXP driver
* can't see both the Pioneer DVD106S and LiteOn 48x40x12 burner
when they are on the same cable on this card
* PC crashes on bootup while loading SII680.SYS if a hard drive
jumpered as master is attached to the motherboard secondary
controller (at the time I had no drives on the ST Lab card)
* the bios on the card is not flashable (no updates possible ever)

Not a problem, I have the Silicon Image own card.

I checked the web site, they say I don't need DOS drivers for XPHome?
Obviously I have the XP driver but I can't work out which the latest one
is. I have v1.0.17.
I'm not sure if/why I might need DOS drivers though.

I have now made some progress since I posted. I have imaged a partition
to DVD+RW but it was slow (90-100mb/min) with Pioneer 106 presumably as
the 106 burns DVD+RW at x2.5 When the system rebooted, I got a blue
screen with an error pointing to pnp680r.sys, looks like Sil Image
related. Any ideas?
Thanks for the speedy response.

I am using Ghost 2002 (7.5). I am booting using a DOS floppy, and running
GHOST from a GHOST floppy.

I believe with Ghost 2003, you tell it what you want it to do, then it
reboots the PC in DOS mode to perform the operations? (like PartitionMagic?)

I'd say that when it reboots to DOS mode, there are no DOS driver for the
Silicon Image card loaded.

If you can't ghost at over 200 (drive to drive, or partition to partition),
it's because the DOS drivers aren't loaded.

Try booting from a DOS boot floppy with the DOS drivers on it, then run
Ghost from a Ghost floppy. That should get you more like 2,000 MB/min
instead of 200MB/min. If that works, you can start to investigate how to get
XP to load the DOS drivers when it reboots to DOS mode.

Sorry, I have no idea about your blue screen problem.

I've had a lot more problems with this Silicon Image controller than I ever
had with Promise controllers.

Good luck.

and add all files to a floppy? I did unzip to a floppy but then my
system failed to read the disc, but if I use a Win 98SE floppy it will
see it.
Perhaps I can add SII680.sys to the 98SE floppy and add the line below

I'm having trouble getting the system to boot from a floppy. It _will_
boot from a 98SE disc or a floppy formatted with system files in XPHome
but if I unzip 0680_dos.zip to a floppy then try to boot from it I get
"Remove disks or other media, press any key to reboot".
I tried unzipping the zip file to a hard drive then copying all files to
floppy except io.sys and command.com. This time the system will boot
from floppy and I can go through the options ,selecting
Device=Sii680.sys etc. but after the last option question I get "The
following file is missing or corrupted: command.com. Type the name of
the command interpreter (e.g. C:\windows\command.com). Whatever I type
in here I get the same message and need to reboot. I also tried using
the command.com that came from the .zip file but I got the same message.
So, I'm stuck there right now and I suppose I could e-mail Silicon Image
again (no answer last time).
Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi John. Well, with your kind assistance I can now instal the 0680
drivers but when I start Ghost from the Ghost floppy to select a
partition to image I only get drive 3 listed. Let me explain ; I have 2
drives running off the Silicon Image card (primary & secondary) and a
3rd drive running off the mobo, not sure if it is primary or secondary.
I run it from there as the cable socket from SCSI won't the 3rd drive
reach.
Actually, the 'drive 3' listed is really drive 2 if I go by the size
listed alongside drive 3, it now looks as if my drives aren't being
recognised properly. Heigh ho!
I wonder if I need to add the 0680.sys to my XPHome config.sys? Would
that then speed up the transfer rate? Ghost does recognise my drives in
XP
Many thanks for your efforts so far, I really appreciate it. I just hope
I can go the extra yard!

Many thanks for your efforts so far, I really appreciate it. I just hope
I can go the extra yard!

Your problem is probably very basic, but it's hard to solve over
the internet.

Did you modify a Win98 boot disk by adding the driver file to the main
folder,
and editing the config.sys file? This is the disc you should
boot the PC with. After the PC boots to the DOS prompt, then
insert the Ghost program disk. You should see all of your drives in Ghost
then.

If you are using the above method, adding the drivers to the WinXP
partition (DOS or windows drivers) won't help the Ghost speed. (you
need to add them to the floppy, because thats what you are booting off.
Boot to the DOS prompt using the floppy.

I was suggesting the above method because it is the easiest way
to get it going initially. Once you get it going using the above method,
you can work on doing the same thing within the WinXP DOS environment

My setup is as follows:

Motherboard IDE1 Master - Hard drive #1
Motherboard IDE1 Slave - CD Burner
Motherboard IDE2 Master - DVD-ROM
Motherboard IDE2 Slave - DVD Burner
Silicon Image Controller IDE3 Master - Hard drive #2
Silicon Image Controller IDE3 Slave - Empty
Silicon Image Controller IDE4 Master - Hard drive #3
Silicon Image Controller IDE4 Slave - Empty

I can see all those hard drives inside Ghost with no problem.

Good luck.

CONFIG.SYS

Your problem is probably very basic, but it's hard to solve over
the internet.
I don't know about basic, it may well be!
Did you modify a Win98 boot disk by adding the driver file to the main
folder,
Well, I put it in the root, not in a folder.
and editing the config.sys file? This is the disc you should
boot the PC with. After the PC boots to the DOS prompt, then
insert the Ghost program disk. You should see all of your drives in Ghost
then.
Yes, did that but as I said previously, I only get drive 3 listed (it is
in fact drive 2!) so I daren't go any further.

Do you boot from drive 1 (mobo)? I boot from SI Controller Master and
drive 3 is on mobo. I get better speed form the controller.
I'm puzzled by the DOS driver package on the SI website. It seems to be
saying unzip the package to a floppy and use that. If I do that, it
calls up a load more settings but finally craps out and won't go any
further so I can't use that. I wonder if these other settings are what I
need.
Thanks John.

Well, I'm out of ideas. Sorry.

Yes. I boot from the mobo drive. But that's not why your ghosting
isn't working, because you are booting from the Win98 boot floppy.

I've never tried that boot floppy from the SI website. I just used
the driver file, as you know.

Did you add the SI driver line in 2 places in the CONFIG.SYS? When I boot
from the Win98 boot floppy, I choose "boot to DOS prompt with no
CDROM support" (or something like that)

I tried that again, but still get the message 'invalid system disc,
please remove all disks'. Might that suggest that perhaps io.sys
MS-DOS.sys is wrong/faulty? I tried replacing these with ones off the
98SE disk but then got something about command.com being wrong. Couldn't
get anywhere with that.

Yes, I checked all that again. Got it in both places. I selected
'without CD-ROM support and Ghost will load but when I select (I think
it was) Image to partition, my drives are shown as follows:
1 - 20gb, 2 - 80gb, 3 - 60gb, whereas they should be

1 - 80gb, 2 - 60gb, 3 - 20gb.
So, I dare not attempt to restore an image in case it writes to the
wrong partition (which it did when I first tried Ghost. Instead of
writing to C again it wrote to partition I and overwrote my backups with
WinXP!!!)
I'm getting similar problems with Acronis True Image, also in this
group, where ATI also gets my drives wrong, it only finds drive 3 (20gb)
which is correct but it misses out 1 & 2!
Looks like I'm stuck with slow Drive Image.
Thanks again for taking the trouble to assist, it is greatly
appreciated.
Regards.

Please check your email. I just sent you some more info.

How did you go with that info I emailed you?
Did it resolve your problem?
Sorry John, major family crisis yesterday. Spent some time on it today
and have mailed you.
Basically, I created the 2 floppies from your list of files but on boot,
I get 'Invalid system disk, remove all disks and press any key'.
I then created a system floppy from XPHome and added your files to it.
This time the system booted from the disk and I could see the si680
drivers being loaded and I could then start the Ghost floppy up to the
Ghost screen. Then, whatever selection I made, I got 'An internal
inconsistency has been detected' and I could do nothing. I mailed you
the ghosterr.txt error file in case it means anything to you. I'm
guessing, but it looks to me as though it didn't recognise any NTFS
disks at all, which is odd, because I seem to remember a few days ago it
was seeing my drives. So much happened yesterday and this morning I'm
not sure now!
I'm planning to look at the other files on your disks to see if any may
have some relevance to this problem. The other thing, I can also start
the system with an old 98SE startup disk but if I use your disk or the
file from Silicon Image website containing (presumably) the same files,
I get the invalid system disk message. Queer or what?
Regards.

Sorry to hear that.

I don't know what your problem could be.

Maybe try checking all of your partitions for errors using WinXP's "Error
Check" utility.

Latest update!
I discovered a boot sector virus which eventually caused my system to
fail to boot. It would fail at NTLDR which I could recover from but it
got worse. I just finished re-installing XPHome+SP1 and a few programs
so I haven't had a chance to try again with the Ghost + Silicon Image
floppy. Having tried Acronis True Image I think I prefer the interface
to Ghost. Am I right in thinking that I can still use the Silicon floppy
drivers with True Image?
