Getting XP and 2000 to Play Nice

I have a small network at home running 2 computers through a switch.

Computer 1: running XP Pro (sp2) can ping computer 1
Computer 2: running 2000 Pro (sp? latest patches applied) cannot ping
Computer 1

Both are on the same subnet and in the same workgroup. Both machines are
able to route to the internet through a Linux firewall (third computer).

I need to share a folder from computer 1 to write to it from computer 2. I
have also tested with other "non" XP machines all of which cn be accessed
from XP but XP will not show any shares on the other non-XP machines. When
looking at the MS Windows Network or the Computers Near Me lists (while
trying to map a share) I can see an entry for Computer 1 but with no shares
available.

I hope someone can help.
Cheers.

Turn off your WinXP firewall while testing!

Found the issue in another thread

PC Cillin installs a personal fire wall.

Added the local lan IP range to it and all is fine.

Hope this helps other who get MBs with PC Cillin thrown in
Cheers.

XP Firewall was initially off. I ended up having it enabled after running
the File / Print share wizard. This did not fix the problem at that time, so
I posted here after searching the forums.

Currently I have BOTH XP Fire Wall and PC Cillin Personal Fire wall running
(bad I know). However as I have PC Cillin now configured to allow my local
subnet access to Computer 1 all is ok.

I will eventually turn off XP Fire wall, PC Cillin has been doing a really
good job (not even letting my computers play nice ;) )

The WinXP is a very basic firewall. There is no reason at all
to keep it running while the Trend Internet Security firewall
is active. You might even consider turning off both firewalls,
seeing that you have a Linux firewall. Keep in mind that
every software firewall slows down your machine!

On computer 1 and 2, make sure that the firewall permits file/printer
sharing, disable it to test, only enable it after you are sure things
are working.

On both computer make sure that you have a common user account and that
the common account has a PASSWORD, the same password, on both computers.

On XP, uncheck Simple File Sharing.

Make sure that the default gateway is the same on both computers.

On XP, make a simple share - created C:\TEMP\SHARE, share the SHARE
folder.

On W2K machine, type (in a DOS Box)
net use X: \\XPComputerName\Share /user:DefinedUser UserPassword

If this fails, then do this:
net use X: \\XP_IP_NUMBER\Share /user:DefinedUser UserPassword

If this fails you have your network setup improperly or you are fire
walling something.

You need TCP/IP, File/Printer Sharing, Client for MS Networks.
