Getting Windows Updates Manually After SP2

M

Marc

Is it possible to review and download Windows updates manually with SP2.
Having installed SP2 when I now go to the update site to scan for updates
(not expecting to find any just yet...), it says that it can't/won't operate
because automatic update service is turned off.

Is there a way of scanning for updates with the auto update service turned
off, or do I have to restart the service each time I want to manually scan
for updates?

Hi, and tks for the reply.

I have 'Automatic Updates' turned off. I would like to be able to go to the
update sites and initiate a manual scan for updates (as I used to do prior
to SP2) without Windows automatically checking.

However, from what I can see, manual scanning at the update site is not
allowed since according to the message displayed the site will not provide a
manual scan function with auto update turned off [Error number: 0x8DDD0018].

The 3 options when auto update is turned on all have SP2 automatically
contact the site to:
a) d/l and auto install
b) d/l but don't install
c) notify but don't d/l

My question is - is there a way to have auto update turned off and still be
able run a manual scan at the update site whenever the user wants? From what
I can tell, the answer is no.

Hi

This should work:

Set AU to off in the Control Panel/Automatic Updates, but set the
service to Automatic (using Start/Run --> services.msc)

The BITS service also needs to be set to either Manual or Automatic
(in theory and in the MS documentation, Manual should be good enough,
but I have seen people needed to have it to Automatic).

I went into the Auto updates and turned it off, then went to the Windows
Update page and I was able to do both manual scans without any problem.

Just thought you may be interested.

You need the Auto Update *Service* set on automatic (and also the
Background Intelligent transfer set to Automatic or Manual - not
disabled) for Update to work at all. It will not get *used*
automatically unless you have that selected in Control Panel - Automatic
Update

In service.msc
Automatic Updates must be set to automatic.
Background Intelligent Transfer Service needs to bet set to automatic

No matter what the settings in Control Pannel-System-Automatic Updates
Tab is.

Yep, problem was I had BITS service disabled. Set it to auto and update site
now works ok.

BITS can be set to manual, and will be started by update should a
download be found
