getting usb ports to work

I have no usb showing in my device manager, and none of the ports work when I
plug something in

1. Reboot the computer before trying the devices.
....if that doesn't work...
2. In the Device Manager update all the USB devices with the operating
system cd in the drive..."all" the USB devices, because I have never worked
out exactly how I got the USB devices to work after they did not work.
....and if that doesn't work...
3. Reconnect the USB devices in up to 5 times, you can try more times but
that's as much as my patience let me try.

....I'm not a pro. These are things I remember trying and that got USB
devices working.

Was USB working before? Or is this a new Windows XP installation or re-
installation? In this case, has the USB driver files for the motherboard
been installed?

It was a barebones unit I purchased and install xp on myself. I do not know
if the files for the motherboard have been installed or not, but it came with
the motherboard already installed and had 2 ports on the front and 2 on the
back.

It is highly unlikely that the motherboard drivers had been installed since
a Windows XP installation would have wiped them in any event. Look for the
utility cdrom that usually accompanies the unit. The chipset driver files,
USB, network, etc., files should be there. The otherwise alternative would
be to visit the websites of the makers of the motherboard and peripherals
and download the missing driver files. Or, finally, return to the builder
of the barebones unit for the files or have he/she load the drivers.

I dont recall getting a utility cd rom with it. I purchased it over a year
ago from Tiger Direct to put together for a friend, and dont know how I would
find out the maker of the motherboard. This was his first attempt at using a
usb device and he contacted me and said they do not work, and I doubt that
after over a year I could get any info from Tiger Direct. Is there anything
else you can recommend to try and get the PC to recognize the USB ports?

There are 2 ways of doing it: One way would be to look up the invoice or
receipt that came from Tiger Direct. The second, open the computer case
and read what's printed on the motherboard.

Bill, it sounds like the USB ports need to be enabled on the motherboard
with USB jumpers but you will need the manual to do that.
Make sure you read the manual. It may be you should not use all USB ports.
Sometimes, if the front USB ports are enabled some of the USB ports should
not be used. The manual will tell you about that.

Everyone seems to have missed the most obvious thing to check, go into BIOS
setup and make sure the ports are enabled, It does no good to try to
troubleshoot or install drivers if the ports are turned off.
