Getting updates for the SUS server manually

I understand you can enter your own server name for the
server to sync to if you want to get updates from a
directory - I think this is correct. But - in order to run
synchronization to get the updates pulled in to the SUS
you have to have certain files - such as "aucatalog1.cab"
or the synchroniztion fails, or I am am doing this wrong??
