My basic problem is that I cannot access my Vista desktop from my XP laptop.
I've seen a few discussions on this, but no clear solution. I can access my
XP laptop from my Vista desktop. I'm sure it is a setting somewhere that I
have overlooked (or perhaps it isn't as obvious as it should be). Big issue
ist that the laptop is wireless and often needs access to shared printers and
files...unfortunately, I can't get to them. Suggestions???

If you're talking about Remote Desktop, Start -> Computer -> System
Properties -> Remote Settings. From there you can select if you want to
allow connections from Vista machines only, or previous versions too.

I've posted the clear solution for getting to either desktop on a dual boot
about 100 clear times on this group.

If your XP were on C:\ and Vista were on say E:\

To get from the XP desktop to Vista: Type either in the run box or any
explorer folder address bar or in a combination run box/IE address bar
embedded in the task bar of either XP or Vista (Rt. Click
taskbar>toolbars>address bar>slide it open at the seem):

E:\Users\sidrboy73's profile\Desktop puts you on the Vista Desktop from XP.

C:\Documents and Settings\Sidrboy73'sprofile\Desktop puts you on the XP
Desktop from Vista.

1) When you do this you don't impact the system restore points on Vista by
shortcutting or any saved backups.
2) You won't access for example Win Mail on Vista from the XP desktop or OE
from the Vista desktop using the shortcut.

Make a shortcut by simply dragging the small icon or iconette if you want to
call it that from the explorer folder that pops up and you can name it XP or
XP Desktop on the Vista Desktop and Vista or Vista Desktop or whatever on
the XP desktop and you don't need to type in the file path to go there--just
click it.

You will find that some folders or going to need permission granted to open
them, but not all that many.

If you meant the XP laptop and *another computer which I suspect you did but
did not make clear, then
Paul showed you remote desktop and you can also type that into help and get
information or the search box of http://support.microsoft.com

I'm not dual booting - just need to get from my XP laptop to my Vista box for
basic file sharing...I can see the files on my XP laptop from the Vista
machine, just not the other way

sldrboy73--

Try:

Network > right click on the Router > Properties > Settings

You may need to add a service, with the ip of the host computer and the
ports.

There are three places that controls remote desktop connection.

1) Control Panel > System > Remote Settings
2) Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Exceptions
3) Control Panel > Network Connections > right click your network card >
Configure > Share > Settings

You think it might help for you to clarify what you mean by can't access the
desktop? Access it how, what is the configuration? If networked how is it
set up? What errors are you getting? What troubleshooting have you tried?
