I have someone that is getting this error message from defender:
remoteaccess:win32/real/VNC

What does this mean and how do I fix it?

Real/VNC is a Commercial Remote Control Application, commonly used by
various hardware manufacturers to support their systems in the field. IBM
uses it extensively, and in such situations it can be legitimate. Only in
the case where the owner of the system is unaware of it's installation or
function should you be concerned, because it can also be used for
illegitimate purposes by malware.

If the owner of that system wants to keep VNC installed the correct action
would be to exclude it from scanning in the Windows Defender Tools/Options.
Otherwise, it should be un-installed or quarantined depending on how it got
on the system to begin with.

Is that something that would show up under remove programs? She is not that
computer savy and I will have to try and do this over the phone as she works
from home.
How do you uninstall the defender? Maybe that would be better.

I'll let Mr. Sanderson who regularly uses VNC respond to that specifically,
but I would think by using Add/Remove unless Real/VNC has been somehow
loaded stealthfully... Normally, installed applications appear in that
list of installed programs.

If your not on Vista the way to remove Windows Defender would also be
through Control Panel Add/Remove. Defender cannot be removed readily from
a machine running Vista. But, why would she want to remove spyware
protection from her system? Getting a malware infection is going to be a
far more serious and troubling situation for her than either removing VNC
or making an adjustment to Defender to exclude VNC from being scanned,
neither of which should be a tremendously difficult process.

maddog btw you should never put your email signature in your signature
unless you want spam or unwanted mail
