Getting system tray icons back

Sometimes my Windows Explorer hangs and I have to terminate it in
Task Manager.

I temporarily lose the desktop but the system automatically
relaunches Windows Explorer and it repaints the desktop.

However I do not get back all the icons in the system tray.

How can I get the icons back? I have tried REBUILD ICONS in
TweakUI for XP but it doesn't help.

Is there some utility which I can run on an ad-hoc basis torestore
those icons?

Why is Explorer hanging, Peter? While doing.....

Windows Explorer seems to hang only ocassionally and it happens
while I am doing things involving a lot of data.

It occurs when maybe I am opening and closing Windoes Explorer
while searching or copying lots of files.

It is not because Windows Explorer is simply busy and it is not
just me being impatient.

The workarounds are listed here:

Troubleshooting the Notification Area
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_n.htm#na

Troubleshooting the Volume Control Icon
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_v.htm#volume

Taskbar Repair Tool Plus!
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm

I tried your Repair Tool Plus!. It is neat but even the options do
not restore all the icons to the notification area. I tried

Hide or Show All Listed Tray Icons (listed where?)
Hide or Show All Inactive Tray Icons
Show Missing Icons

For example I use an application called "Yankee Clipper 3"
http://www.yankee-clipper.net/index.html to store previous entries
made to the clipboard. It's notification area icon is not restored
when Win Exploerer reloads and Repair Tool Plus! does not recover
its icon. However Task Manager shows Yankee Clipper is still
running. Have you tried this application?

Explorer is a useless file manager. It is not particulary good on 98,
and is worse under XP.
The solution to your problem is to use a decent file manager, or to
use explorer only within the limits that experience has taught you to
be practical. I generally use ACDSee 2.42 as my file manager, but you
will find a lot of recommendations in a.c.f for apps such as
2xexplorer and turbo navigator etc.
Closing a hanging explorer using ctrl alt del is a final resort and
the only sensible thing to do afterwards is to reboot.

Explorer isn't a file manager, it's a namespace browser. You just show your inability to use or understand windows.

I have the same type of problem occasionally, and the *only* solution I've
found is to use Task Manager to kill said programs, then reload them. Other
than that, I have to reboot (which is about as fast). If someone has a
better solution, I'd sure like to know it.

Rewrite the program. It's not XP compatable. XP programs are supposed to react to the request to readd but noone programmed that ability into your program. There is no fix and your work around is the only way.
