Why does Microsoft make us put our email in here?

I posted a topic in the Excel forum the other day and now
I have over 100 spammer emails each day from losers
claiming to be "Microsoft" with the latest patch or pack
or whatever.

Thanks for whoring out my email address!

Microsoft doesn't "whore" out your email address. Spammers write tools that
can harvest email addresses from newsgroups. You can always configure your
newsgroup account with a fake address.

You could have put in a fake one. Lots of others do. Welcome to the
wonderful world of Usenet news. Don't blame Microsoft. They didn't invent
Usenet.

that's not really a spammer - it's a virus that grabs addresses from
newsgroups and web page - every infected person who reads newsgroups sends
out more infected messages.

(I'm getting over 1000 a day... wanna trade? :))

So what's the best way to stop the madness besides
changing my email address?

I was hoping it would stop after one or two mailings but
it doesn't look like that is going to happen.

The horse has bolted, to late to shut the gate, Learn form the lesson and
NEVER post your email address on Usenet, this one is definetly not MS's
fault.

If you can't easily change your email address with yrou ISP, use Mailwasher
to intercept the e-mail before you download it.

http://www.mailwasher.net

Then do some reading on using Usenet.

I've set up a rule that seems to get rid of the current barrage of junk,
silently and in the background.

It appears that many (some?) ISP's use a Brightmail service to screen
messages for viruses. Somewhere along the line, the offending executables
are being intercepted by "Brightmail(r)", but nevertheless the message
itself is still sent on to me, with a notation in the body of the message
that the email "has been processed by Brightmail(r)" and that it was
infected with a virus.

It's nice that the virus was intercepted, but I certainly don't need a
mailbox full of such notifications.

I've set up a rule at the ISP level (i.e. at the ISP's site where I can
retrieve my mail online) whereby any and all messages that contain
"Brightmail(r)"in the body are permanently deleted.

As a backup, I've set up a similar rule in OL (just in case)..

Seems to be working. (In fact, at the ISP level, I've been "moving" the
offending messages into a newly created folder, just so I can see if the
msgs are still coming in. The folder online has been catching two or three
every hour, but NONE of them are getting through to my computer when OL
download my mail).

Aren't you the lucky one. I did change my e-mail address
and I avoid the last attack completely.
