getting rid of title?

I am working with a ppt created by someone else. It has a master slide with
a graphic background and an area to enter text. I want to be able to name
the pages with their associated "codes" so I can easily find them, but
whenever I type their code in the bookmark area, the code immediately
appears on the page as a title, and I don't want it on there.

I don't see this field on the master page, so I'm unclear how to turn this
feature off. If I try to delete it from any page in particular, it merely
deletes my page code (as entered in the bookmark area).

Help?! I'm using v 2000.

Thanks.

Not sure if this is what you are talking about, but the Master slide shows
the placeholders and their formats. You need to click "View", "Header and
Footer" to view the actual text that will go in the bottom areas. This
"code" you speak of might be the "Footer" text placekeeper.

If this is not what you are looking for, holler back with additional
explanation of what you want.

The Master Slide layout probably has an autolayout for the Title. If you
don't want it to appear on the slide, just drag it off into the "non-slide"
area. Your code will show in the outline, but not on the slide itself.

Master header or footer did not contain this "title" field. Went with the
next suggestion - just made the text white and pt size 1. At least it can't
be seen now. : )

Thanks...

That won't work - I'd have to do it for every slide. Problem is, I can't
find the field on the slide master, and there doesn't appear to be a title
master (it's unavailable from the View/Masters pulldown).

Again, if I delete the field from the slides themselves, the page title gets
removed from the list that displays along the left (sorry, I don't know the
name of that pane - it's the one with the presentation page numbers).

I'm really at a loss as to how this field got in there, and how to get it
out without going through each slide and making it invisible.

Is there perhaps a "there is no title master" template that may be being
used in the background?

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the critical
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]

Hello,

PowerPoint doesn't provide the functionality that you are looking for.
Slide names ("codes") come from text entered into the Title placeholder
provided by the layout that you are using.

If you (or anyone else reading this message) think that it's important that
PowerPoint provide this kind of functionality (slide "name" independent of
slide "title"), don't forget to send your feedback (in YOUR OWN WORDS,
please) to Microsoft at:

http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

As with all product suggestions, it's important that you not just state
your wish but also WHY it is important to you that your product suggestion
be implemented by Microsoft. Microsoft receives thousands of product
suggestions every day and we read each one but, in any given product
development cycle, there are only sufficient resources to address the ones
that are most important to our customers so take the extra time to state
your case as clearly and completely as possible.

IMPORTANT: Each submission should be a single suggestion (not a list of
suggestions)

The left hand pane is called the Outline Pane and lists the slide title for
each slide, if one exists. The slide title is a special field that is
controlled by a title placeholder. When you type text in the outline pane,
it automatically generates a slide title, whether the slide layout includes
a placeholder or not. If you want to see a title or code in the outline,
but not on the slide, do as I suggested and drag the title placeholder off
the slide and into the dark gray area.

Hi "R",

my guess is, that someone removed the title placeholder from the master. If
you use a layout for your slide that normally HAS a title placeholder (e.g.
"Text and title"), there WILL be a title placeholder on that slide, no
matter whether there is one in the master or not.

I would recommend you insert the title placeholder again into the slide
(there's an icon "Master layout" on the toolbar "Slide Master View" for
that) and then drag it off the slide, as Sonia suggested.

It will not be visible during the presentation. But you can use it to add a
"name" to your slide, which will show up in the slide list or outline on the
left, if you wish.

Kind regards,
Ute
