getting rid of "REVERSE SORT ORDER" in Windows XP

Hi all,

When you view the contents of a folder via the "LIST"
option and then VIEW-->arrange icons--> by name and then
it sorts all the files. The problem is that if you do
this again, it sorts the files in REVERSE SORT ORDER in
decending filenames.

Is there anyway to disable the REVERSE SORT ORDER and have
it just sort in ascending order always and not go back and
forth each time the filenames are sorted ?

If so, it would save me a TON of troubles in dealing with
this XP behavior as Windows 2000 does not seem to do this.

Thank you for your time,
Rudy Davis

Click on the "Date" column header until the sort order is correct.

Thanks for the suggestion but that is not what I am
looking for.

I am using a VIEW-->LIST (not DETAILS) and thus I have no
DATE column and I am not interested in changing away from
LIST.

What I specifically need is to stay in VIEW-->LIST and
then go to VIEW-->ARRANGE ICONS--> BY NAME and then I want
it to stop changing back and forth from ascending to
descending order every time this is done. I need it to
ONLY sort in ascending order just like Windows 2000
behavior. Windows XP behavior is to keep jumping back and
forth between ascending and decending sort order.

Rudy.

By default, Windowx XP sorts numerals in strings that are contained in file and folder names according to their numeric value

Thanks Ramesh,

I have seen that article.

Actually I want Windows XP to only sort in ascending order
while in VIEW-->LIST when I do an "arrange icon by name"
and not go back and forth between ascending and descending
order every time I do an "arrange icon by name".

I wish there was a registry entry to stop the "back and
forth" sort behavior.

Rudy,

Sorry, I'm not aware of such an option. Workaround is to press F5 to have the files re-arranged in the same order mentioned [which is set current, ascending or descending]. Arrange Icons by > Name option will again toggle [ascending <>descending] the sort order. This behaviour is unchangeable, AFAIK.

Ok, it appears that you want files sorted alphabetically by name in
ascending order ("A" at the top, "Z" at the bottom.)

A) If you want this to be the default sort and view for individual
folders,
1) Click on "Tools>Folder Options" in the Menu
2) Click on the "View" tab
3) In the "Advanced Settings" list, go down until you find "Remember each
folder's view settings"
4) Click on "Ok"
***********************************************************
B) Then do (1-5) below for each folder you want.
1) Click on the control at the end of the Toolbar (the icon of a window) and
select "Details"(This is necessary so that you can temporarily get a "Name"
column header so that you can sort the list the list the way you want it)
2) Right-click on the "Name" column header
3) Make sure only "Name" is checked
4) Click on the "Name" column-header until the sort order is the way you
want it
5) Click on the control at the end of the Toolbar (the icon of a window) and
select "List" (this will get rid of the temporary "Details" [needed to get
the "Name" colum header so that you can sort the folder the way you want it]
view and return you to a purely "List" view)
***********************************************************
C) If you want this to be the default sort and view for ALL folders
Do (A) and (B) above for at least one folder; then,
1) Click on "Tools>Folder Options" in the Menu
2) Click on the "View" tab
3) Click on the button labeled "Apply to All Folders"
4) Answer "Yes" when asked if you really want to apply that view to all
folders
