Does anyone no how to uninstall Messenger which I don't
want to use but continues to bug me about signing in? I
went to Install/Delete Programs but Messenger was not a
separate program. Thanks

Which Messeneger? There are two: MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger.

Also, in Messenger's Tools > Options > Preferences you can uncheck the
option to start Messenger when Windows starts. This should remove the
sign-in annoyance if you can't figure out how to uninstall.

I have the same problem, as soon as I log onto the
internet I'm signed into messenger, and when I open up
MSN Messenger 6.2, it logs me out and back in because I
am apparently signing in at a different location! .....
how do I get rid of this stupid Windows Messenger!!

Ok. You will lose a couple of applications that Windows Messenger supported.
But I don't think it makes much of a difference. I don't think I ever used
those applications, or at least I don't think I will ever need to use them. I
have no idea what "whiteboard" is...

The following is a quote I picked up here in Usenet - sorry I didn't quote the
name of the poster. Copy/paste the line near the bottom of the quote into
start\run:
------------------------ begin quote:

You can completely remove Windows Messenger (4.7) but if you do, you will be
preventing Remote Assistance, Whiteboard, Application Sharing and any other
applications that utilize Messenger from working (or loading without
problems).
<snip>
However, if you really want to remove it completely, for Windows Messenger
4.7, close down Messenger if it's running (right click the messenger icon in
the notification area/system tray and click close). Then click the start
button, then click Run and type in (copy-paste if you like):

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled.

------------------ end quote

Worked for me. Now only people see me if I log in when I want, with MSN
Messenger.

Hi,

To Prevent Windows Messenger from Running on a Windows XP-Based Computer
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;302089&Product=WinMsgr

When you do this your Windows Messenger won't show up in your taskbar
anymore

However if you want to completely remove/uninstall Windows Messenger from
Windows XP can be found at this website made by Jonathan Kay.
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/problem.aspx?ID=7

Follow the steps and the pictures that the website has and you shouldn't
have anymore problems. Uninstalling Windows Messenger can disable some of
the messenger features such as Whiteboard Sharing, and others on MSN
Messenger if you're using that.

How do I get rid of Windows Messenger?
I removed it using Add/Remove Windows Components but when I got to the
hard drive and click on Program Files there is a folder called Messenger
with windows messenger inside and when I try to delete it it says: access
is denied then it says
make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not
currently in use.
I right clicked on it and clicked on proberties and it has the box called
read only checked and I wasnt sure if that had anything to do with it so I
unselected it clicked apply to all files and folders. and then tried to
delete it and it didnt work so I right clicked on it again and the box was
selected again im not sure if that means anything or not.

Please help,
Cody

I have always had problems with the dreadful Windows Messenger - though I
uncheck the 'Load when Windows Starts' box, it still always runs in the
background. Even if I 'End Process' from Task Manager (and I have no idea if
that's a good idea or not), it reloads the .exe a few seconds later. I'm
going to do the unistall thing and hope for the best. (Though I imagine the
new XP version will reinstall it again...)

Cheers,

Chris
