Getting rid of headers (and footnotes)

Hi,
I'm editing a pretty old document (early 90s) which was originally written
in WordPerfect (don't know the version). I've converted it to Word 2003,
it's been fairly straightforward sailing so far but I've encountered a
problem with the headers and footers. I would like to get rid of them and
start afresh, but I'm unable to do so. I've followed the procedure set out
in Word Help - like get the headers up and then hit "delete" but this
doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions :) ??

Hi

I'm not new to word, had new laptop delivered yesterday
with Word 2003.

I have exactly the same problem as Roy. 2-page document,
different first page header and footer.

First page header = 2004, want to change second page
header to 2005.

In second page, try to change the 4 to a 5, going to end
of line and hitting backspace moves the cursor back but
does not delete the five.

Going inbetween second 0 and the 4 and hitting delete
moves cursor to the right of the 4.

Highlighting everything and hitting delete does nothing!!

There is nothing wrong with my keyboard - this problem is
occurring in the header only.

Helen

Please help, as it's doing my head in!!!

Hi, helen. In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit | check the "Typing
replaces selection" box | OK. I'm guessing the 2004 and 2005 in your headers
were not typed in, but are actually page number fields. If you slowly mouse
over the "edge" of the number 2004 or 2005, does the cursor briefly change
shape to a four-way arrow? If so, left-click once when the cursor changes to
the four-way arrow, and press the Delete key to delete the field.

Hi, Roy. What is in the header? If it's text, triple-click on a word in the
header, then press the Delete key. If it's a page number, double-click on
the page number, then press the Delete key. If it's a graphic, click on the
graphic, then press the Delete key.

Hi,
there nothing in the headers, the problem is that they occupy space (up to
10 lines) at the top of the page, whereas I only need a 1 line header.
Basically, I've been trying to reduce the size of the headers, sorry if I
didn't make that clear at the beginning.

Hi, Roy. To get rid of any blank lines and floating frames/text boxes
anchored to the header or footer, click on View | Header, press Ctrl+A,
and press the Delete key... switch to the footer, press Ctrl+A, and
press the Delete key... close the header/footer. Reset the page and
header/footer margins by clicking on File | Page Setup | Margins tab |
Top Margin: 1" | Bottom Margin: 1" | Layout tab | Header: 0.5" | Footer:
0.5" | Vertical alignment: Top | OK. Does it look better now?

garfield-n-odie has addressed some of the issues here. Some other
possibilities to check out:

1. The header/footer paragraph may have Space Before/After.

2. The vertical alignment of the page may be set to Center (Layout tab of
Page Setup).

3. In documents converted from WordPerfect, there are often numerous section
breaks (sometimes one at the end of every page). This means that anything
you do in one header may have no effect on the next page. Check the status
line for section numbers. I usually find it useful to just delete all
section breaks (using Find and Replace) before starting on reformatting a WP
doc.

thanks for all the help, I finally got the headers and footers under
control. The document was originally written in WordPrefect, as I
mentioned earlier, and, I guess, moving it across to the Word format
generated some weirdo stuff. At any rate, things seem OK now.
