I have a crt and my eyes are straining with this...

I have disabled it from the main setting for windows, but WM seems to want
to still have this.

why didnt they make clear type a system wide setting?

Cleartype is not designed for CRT screens.
Anyway, switching it off should switch it off for all. Its simply you
either have cleartype or not, as far as I know it does not switch from one
program to another. Are you sure you are not simply confusing it with a
smoother font?

It is, AFAIK.

ClearType is normally used with LCD monitors, though it has improved a
CRT here.

However, be aware that CT works only with TrueType (TT) fonts.

Cleartype in my opinion is worse for all screens, including LCD screens.
Whenever I set up a system, I show the user the system with cleartype
on and also with cleartype off. No one has EVER preferred the system
with cleartype on (and I use LCD displays almost exclusively, not to
mention that many of these are laptops). For the life of me, I can't
understand how anyone would prefer cleartype on any display.

I much prefer cleartype on my laptop LCD. It just makes all the fonts alot
clearer and not jagged.

Ah.... could be because it looks much better and is easier on the eyes.
