When I connect up my digital camera to my USB on the PC a window pops up
saying autoplay. It has blue bars running across.

I'm surer it's not necessary and it's highly irritating.

Do I need it?

Can I get rid of it?

Trevor, you can try going to Control Panel>Scanners and Cameras>rt click
on your Camera and select Properties. See
if there's a entry there that you can disable.

There's no device listed in there. Jus an icon for adding a device.

Is there any software or drivers that you had to install that came with
the Camera?

Trevor, go to Start>All Programs and look for an Icon for the Camera
Software. If there, you can click on it and see if
there's a way to disable autoplay.

There's no software there (Ricoh) for the camera.

Does the camera show as a drive in Explorer when it is connected? If yes,
you can try using the properties and disabling autoplay there or changing
all media types on the AutoPlay page to "take no action." However, you may
find that the prompt still appears now and then.

A different solution, would be to use TweakUI for XP. Use the Autoplay
settings in this program to disable that feature for the camera "drive."
TweakUI for XP is a Power Toy download from Microsoft. You can find it in
the Download section of the http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/ pages.

Addendum: If your camera program registers itself with this portion of XP,
you could select it in the list of available actions as the preferred
action. After that's that done what should happen: Attaching the camera
would automatically launch the camera program instead of bringing up the
prompt.
