I might even be referring to the wrong menu here, there's the menu
down the bottom on the right, it's not that one, and there's the one
down the bottom on the left, not the start menu, the one that runs
along the bottom for a bit then displays straight up when you click on
it. On 98SE I could just drag icons to it and they'd take but I don't
seem able to do this on XP. Any help appreciated!

Hi

Right click on the Quick Launch bar and select Open Folder. Then right
click again and select New>Shortcut.

What counts as the quick launch bar? The bottom bar is mostly full of
icons and where it isn't right-clicking doesn't produce an Open Folder
option.

The Quick Launch bar is the one next to the Start button with the icons for
Show Desktop and Internet Explorer in it.

I assume you have now identified the area of the taskbar as the quick
launch area. You may drag any program shortcut to this area and it will
be added. You may also drag existing icons to different locations within
the quick launch area to change the order of the icons. If you right
click on an existing icon you may choose copy or delete. You can not
paste shortcuts into the quick launch area.
I hope this helps

A clarification here: the Quick Launch Bar is actually *not* an area of the
Task Bar. It is a toolbar, separate and distinct from the Task Bar. Although
by default, the Quick Launch Bar resides *on* the Task Bar, it doesn't have
to; it can be dragged off the Task Bar, and docked on another side of the
screen (the same is true of other tool bars).

In fact, dragging it to another side of the screen is a very good option for
many people. if you do that, you can get room for lots of Quick Launch icons
without taking up a lot of Task Bar real estate.

No I can't, I get a yellow bar comes up in the way. If I ignore it and
keep dragging the icon over the QL area, I get a no entry symbol.

Something else funny, I can't get Easyclean to open in a window
anymore. I click on the shortcut, it flies out into the centre of the
screen, flutters a bit, then dives down to the taskbar. I can't get it
to open properly at all. I notice with other programs, when they're
minimised, if I right-click they have maximise to desktop in the
resulting menu. Easyclean doesn't have that. Very odd, my desktop.
