On my old computer I had a preview area on the left side of the
righthand pane of windows explorer.

If I clicked a Word document or a picture then a minuature version
of the file would show there. Also there would be some
technical details about the file.

How do I display this preview area

The preview area no longer exists. You can get details about the file, but
no picture or preview. It posed a security risk to have files auto-preview.

I thought the preview was something to do with having a "web view"
of the folder. Surely this does not have anything to do with
security?

Auto-previewing a file or graphic in explorer could launch malicious code if
it was embedded into the file, document, or graphic. I believe this is why
this was taken out. Thumbnail view is the next closest thing.
