I hope someone can help. Dell will NOT! I have a SONY
digital camera (mod#MVC-FD87) that uses a preformated
disc. When I try to download the disc to a file, I get an
error msg. "disc not formated". Dell,(via e-mail) had
stated that no additional software was required, but now
when I try to contact them, they will only SELL me the
information I need. ( automated message "please have a
credit card, or, purchase number ready")

I have a Mavica FD90...I find that the 3.5" floppies
are recognized by WinXP just like any other 3.5"
floppy. I just click on the icon for the 3.5" drive and
copy the files to my hard drive.

I also have the MSAC-FD2MA Floppy Adapter that
allows me to use the Sony memory stick...for that I
have to use special software. Are you having the
problem with a floppy disk or with the Adapter?

BTW, there is a discussion forum for Mavicas
at the following link:

Have you formatted the disk using windows or the camera? If you formatted
using Windows then you need to format using the camera. The following may
help explain even though it is about the memory stick.

Interesting....I haven't read that before. I'm
aware that it happens with CDs / DVDs.

Here's an article on it:

Sony Memory Stick Does Not Work After You Format It with

I format my floppies in WinXP and they work fine
in my Mavica. It's not the same as a memory card
or stick.

The memory stick is a different story, I have special
software for that but I still do it on the computer, not
in the camera.

How to troubleshoot disk errors displayed on a Mavica® floppy disk camera.
Verify that the correct floppy disk, or Memory StickTM floppy disk adapter is being
used.
IMPORTANT: Standard floppy disks need to be IBM formatted 1.44MB 2HD disks.
Verify that the write-protect tab on the floppy disk is set to the recording
position.
Attempt to format the disk in the camera.
NOTES:
It is possible that a preformatted disk will still need to be formatted in order to
work.
It may be necessary to remove and reinsert the battery or ac power source before
formatting the disk.
Reset the camera.
NOTE: If the issue is not resolved, insert another blank floppy disk into the camera
and repeat the above steps. Otherwise, the camera will require service

A November 2003 driver is available, maybe newer than yours

John,
The Camera formats the disk using the Fat file system, WindowsXP formats
using Fat32 or NTFS and this will cause problems with the disk being
unreadable by the computer when the disk is formatted in windows and used in
the camera. It doesn't occur all the time but it does happen. I Have
experienced the same problem with my Sony and every time it was because the
disk had been formatted in WindowsXP. I was able to get around this by using
a different computer than the one the disk was formatted on or by using a
USB Floppy Drive

Thanks for the info Paul...but I have never had a
floppy problem with two different Mavica cameras
and on Win98 and WinXP.

It just goes to show that everyone's experiences are
different, that's why the newsgroups are so informative.

XP does not and cannot format 3.5" floppies in anything
other than FAT. Take any floppy you have on hand, insert
it in the drive, and check the properties. If you find one
that's formatted FAT32 or NTFS, let us know.

Thanks for the link.

Since I am only using the 1.44MB disks in
my Mavicas I have not seen the problem.

As I said..we all have different experiences.

To be more Clear It is NOT About XP formatting the Floppy FAT32 or NTFS, XP
uses the NTFS format this causes problems with the Disk when it is formatted
on the computer and used in the camera then one may experience access issues
with the disk when trying to access on the computer after taking pictures.
