Getting online support for installation

Windows XP won't install. How does one ask for online
support for installation issues? The online support page
asks for a product number, which can only be found AFTER
installing the product!!!! Sigh. I think Windows XP
will be going back to the store.

I tried installation several times. The following 2 error
codes occur early in the installation process each time:

Error Starting Program:
C:\\WINDOWS\SETUP\SETUPSTARTAPIDLL
file appears to appears to be corrupt. Reinstall, then
try again
The little progress bar continues progressing despite this
error. Clicking the OK button on this error only closes
the error box after approximately 20 clicks. Even after
closing the box, there appears to be some installation
progress that continues for about 5 more minutes.

C:\$WIN_NT$~LS\I386\ASMS\1000
\MSFT\WINDOWS\GDIPLUS\GDIPLUS.CAT
is corrupt; it contains all zeroes.
Clicking on the OK button on this error stops the
installation process. A wizard pops up saying something
like "Restoring computer. Can not complete
Installation." NOT clicking on the button does not help
either.

In addition to the above codes that occur on each
installation attempt, the following 3 errors occurred on
the first installation attempt, but not on subsequent
attempts:

The d:\i386\wwnt32EXE file appears to be corrupt
Reinstall the file, then try again.

Winnt32error

Windows can not start. <Windows root> system32\hal.dll
Reinstall copy of the above file.

Greetings --

Problems copying files or corrupted files during installation are
most often caused by defective or sub-standard hardware; in order of
likelihood, either RAM, the hard drive, or the motherboard. On much
less frequent occasions, a bad CD or defective CD drive can also cause
this.

That's so many different possible problems, there's no
point trying to fix it. I guess I should give up on XP
until I just get a new machine.

Thank you to all who sent ideas. I finally came across a
page that indicated that phone support is free (rather
than $35) for installation issues. The person there
agreed that I could not access the ID number until
installation is complete, and he passed me on to a
technition, who solved the problem. He had me copy
the "corrupt" file to the C drive, and install from
there! Amazing. :-)
