Getting Focus on Desktop cursor

I like using keyboard shortcuts a lot of the time (I'm a recent convert to
this. Wen I "wake" my WinXP system by tapping a key, I can use the arrow
keys to highlight "Owner" and hit enter to get to the Desktop. But I can't
seem to figure out how to get the focus on the Desktop. I have to click the
mouse somewhere first, or hover it over an item to highlight it. Then I can
use the arrow keys to navigate around the Desktop to the item I want.

Does anyone know how to avoid using the mouse to get focus on the Desktop?

Thanks in advance,
Jack

Thanks, "Bill," that's another useful keyboard technique. I still am
trying to figure out how to get the first desktop icon highlighted on a
fresh startup. After one is highlighted, it's easy to arrow around (or
Tab, now!) to the others on the desktop. It seems that when Windows first
starts up, focus is not on any of the Desktop icons. It's not a big deal
to click with the mouse somewhere on the screen to activate the focus
function...I'm just trying to see if it's possibe to do it without the
mouse.

That's it! Thanks, David. I have to hit Tab about 3 or 4 times before one
of the icons get highlighted...I'm thinking it's because each of the first
few hits is sending focus to programs running in the background. But I've
got it...thanks again.

Watch carefully, first tab goes to Quicklaunch (if on) and the second to taskbar, third to system notification area, fourth to desktop (assuming 1 x QL toolbar only, extra toolbars = extra tabs). Use the arrow keys to select various icons on the way to desktop (eg a taskbar button). Shift + F10 to bring up a context menu (incl Start), Enter or Space to Dbl click.
