Can someone tell me how to configure Windows XP so the drives and CD icons
appear on the desktop automatically as is done on a Mac? I'm going crazy
trying to figure it out.

Click on Start, My Computer, right click on the disk and or cd and select
"create shortcut".

You can add a my computer toolbar to the desktop. To do this : Drag the My
Computer icon to any side you want and it will be converted in a toolbar.

All that does is create One icon pointing to the My Computer folder. You
must click on it to open it.

The persons wants a unique ICON for EACH Drive.

Not to good on reading comprehension are you? Don't you know the difference
between a toolbar and a shortcut icon? Following Ayushs advice will give the
OP what he ask for. By the way, I have the My Computer 'TOOLBAR' set to auto
hide. It's available when needed yet keeps the desktop clean.

Yeah, I guess there's a lot of that going around, since by doing it that way
you get all the ancillary stuff, e.g., Control Panel, Shared Documents, My
Documents, .... which the person did not request to have.

Drop shortcuts to the drives in the \documents and settings\all
users\desktop folder. This will place the icons on the desktop for all
existing users and any new users you create.
