Getting correct song Titles, Artists, Year and Genre

I am finally putting my songs from PC to portable music player.
I don't have all the CDs with me as some are packed away in storage
boxes but have copied the songs onto hard drive.
Now that I am wanting to put them on the Portable music player, I would
like to check if I have the correct titles, artists, albums, year and
genre.
Is there a program that can do this for me and correct my errors? I am
trying MP3Tag v2.21 at the moment, but if I choose the wrong
information, it writes the incorrect info to the tag.
I guess I am needing a "central place" wherby I can connect and have it
update the songs with the information that is correct for that
song/album/artist etc.

PS - I hope you can understand what I need to do as I am not sure on the
correct terminolgy.

Try musicbrainz.org - it works pretty well
