Hi,
I am new to this and want to know he experience of people. Is there any
quality loss when you convert a source from Camcorder to DVD via firewire
port. Please advice on software/settings etc to use. I do not mind spending
time, but need to retain the quality.

If there is a loss of quality, how bad. Please reply.

Thanks
Arun

If it's a digital camcorder and you capture with firewire in DV-AVI mode,
there should be very little loss of quality.

If you have an analog camcorder and capture via analog capture hardware, it
is NOT ever going to be DVD quality as it was not recorded in that
resolution.

Hello there,

In practical terms there is no discernable loss of quality if you
capture to the DV-AVI format...as you work your way towards the lowest of
the WMV options quality loss increases. I use DV-AVI all of the time...the
reason is that when you edit the video applying transitions or effects less
"damage" is done to the resulting video compared to editing one of the
higher compressed WMV formats....once you have finished your editing you can
then create the final video at the quality level that best suits your needs.

Hope that helps.

Do you really mean DV or DVD ? Please clarify.

You have written DVD twice in your message (once in subject and once in the
body) so I assume you actually are writing your movie from camcorder
directly to "DVD".

In this case, YES, there is a significant quality loss as MPEG2 format which
is used to make a DVD Video, uses a lossy compression algorithm which is
optimized for viewing but not for further editing.

On the other hand if you capture your digital movie in DV-AVI format using
the same setup (firewire) your captured movie would be huge but with minimal
quality loss. This (DV) is good for editing but not practical for final
distribution/viewing as it takes a lot of storage (13GB ~= 1 hour ). So
after editing most people convert the movie to DVD Video format for easy
viewing.
