Getting a VERY SLOW start up and Black Screen that flashes on and

G

When I turn on my computer, I have 5 names on Vista...After the computer
boots up and I click on one of my user names, it goes to that name and loads-
in the process of loading, the screen goes black- flashes off-goes on and you
see the desktop and then goes black again and then it fully loads.

I use McAfee Antivirus..I downloaded POGO.com games and that is when all
hell broke loose...Then I downloaded Windows Live One Care on a trial basis...

I have no idea what to do to make this work better and faster...

I had a new hardrive put in a month ago and the computer is only 6 mos old.

HELP

Could you give us some information about your computers specifications such
as Processor speed, amount of memory, type of graphics - discreet, onboard.
Do you have a lot of applications installed, have ran a defrag lately,
cleaned out temporary file directories, cleaned up your disk. Is this an
upgrade from a previous version of Windows or Clean install. Have you
checked your Startup Options and disabled unnecessary startup options?

Open Run command
Windows Key + R (or search for the 'Run' from the Start menu Instant Search
field
type in MSCONFIG
Hit Enter
Go to Startup (tab)
Uncheck any unnecessary programs that are starting up with the system.

You have 1/2 answered your own question!

Uninstall Pogo games if they are causing a prob. As Andre says, post your
Graphics and RAM; your hardware may not be for a Gaming computer.

Uninstall McAfee, and just use Live One Care.
A point to note; you CAN NOT run 2 antiviruses on a computer at the same
time, unless you want heartache!

Is Liv One Care better as McAfee is free with my comcast account. I am
uninstalling pogo.com as we speak to see if it works better.

Mick- I uninstalled my Micro. Live One Care, my pogo games and all the wild
tangent that came with the toshiba laptop...The computer does handle media
and video and gaming...

I restarted my computer- it was faster but i STILL had a regular screen,
then a black screen, then a regular screen again...I know I do NOT have any
virus nor spyware...as LiveOne did a scan last ntie that ran for 6 hrs..and
McAfee also ran a scan...

Is there anything to get rid of this black screnn or do I just live with it...

I have 2 gig of memory ( 2038MB)

32 bit operating system

Intel CPU T2250 @ 1.73 ghz

It is a Toshiba Satellite A 135-S4427 Laptop
that came with Win Vista Home Premium.

Thanks and all other help with be wonderful...

I am gonna be honest with you, I have had nothing but head aches with
Windows Live OneCare from version 1.0. It messed my Windows XP installation
so much its pretty much a Frankenstein at the moment. I ran 1.5 on Vista x86
during the betas, but never had it for long since I had to format. I ran
version 2.0 beta (although its a beta) but it made my Vista x64 installation
very unstable and I had to uninstall through Diagnostics Mode.

It has some nice qualities with making Networking and Backup simple and its
licensing supports up to 3 Computers, but its so slow when it scans and
reports that it fails to catch the most basic of viruses leaves a bad taste
in my mouth. Other highlights, 'guaranteed' support under Windows Vista x86,
its always nice seeing an all green Security Center.

A defrag was done last nite, the temp files was cleaned as was the disc
cleanup..
It is not an upgrade from Win Vista- it came on the Toshiba laptop-with Win
Vista Home Premium.

I have disabled a ton of start up items but for some reason they are still
starting up- ie. yahoo IM, MSN Im, AOL im....

In my other answer below , I answered all the computer questions that my
brain can understand. I have no idea what you mean by discreet or onboard
graphics.
ALL I do know is the computer CAN support AutoCad ....which is not loaded yet.

Give us an idea of what you mean by slow:

Start up time - BIOS to Account screen:
Log in to Desktop:

Are multiple users logged in doing multi-tasking or is this just affecting
single log on sessions?

Definitions you asked for:
Discreet graphics - dedicated video card that is not shared with system
memory such an nVidia Geforce 8500 GT
On Board Graphics - your video memory is dependent upon a certain amount
system memory that is allocated

Log in to Desktop: this is where is it super slow- with the blinking black screen

Are multiple users logged in doing multi-tasking or is this just affecting
single log on sessions? NO - this is mainly when I boot up the computer and get into each individual name- when I am in each name, that is when the black screen blinks once, the desktop appears and black screen again and then all is well...

I must have an on board graphics card-- as I upgraded the memory to 2 gig so
I would not have any problems at all...

Mick or Andre=
I have tried to uninstall pogo.com- it is NOWHERE in my startup or
add/remove programs..but When I turn on the computer, it is still showing up
in the PROGRAMS list..I don't know how to get rid of it and all I need to do
is click on it, and I get right to the games.

In addition, Ebay has a symbol on my desktop and there is nothing on the
add/remove programs that even says ebay so I have no idea how to get rid of
it,,,

Can someone help as I am still getting the blinking black screen...

Your system seems to be in a weird state right now, I can only recommend
that you either do a System Restore to a point in time before you installed
these games and started experiencing these problems or do a reinstall of
Windows (which I know you don't want to do.

Doesn't pogo use Java?

Look in control panel>add remove programs and see if you find Java
runtime environment 6 and another with the word update in it, if so I.m
pretty sure you should remove the earliest one. Java machine updates do
NOT overwrite or uninstall the old version and that can still be used
maliciously. The latest one is called Java(TM)6 Update 2 I think.

Also check IE settings and try disabling add ons.

If you have an AV, anti spyware or third party firewall find the
settings for them and change so they do not start when windows starts.
AVG doesn't have one I don't think, but many do. Set anything you can
not to load with windows and then reboot, I suggest always do this and
reboot to make sure things are not running before trying to uninstall
them, especially with things related to security as they often try to
protect themselves from malicious uninstall and if you try once they are
running you can leave parts of them behind but with no way to control them.

It seems to me like the screens you see when Vista loads depend somewhat
on the video drivers and card in use so don't rule out the possibility
that you see something different to others but it's quite normal. :)

Sorry if I have missed the point somewhere but add ons, toolbars and
other spurious (dare I say crap) are fundamentally a bad idea. This
applies to Yahoo, Google (Less so) and anything you don't need and
probably will never use, however reputable the supplier. Yahoo has
actually become an invasive bloody nuisance IMHO, you can tell them I
said that (Like that will make a difference). Also things like
weatherbug type things, they all can become a severe pain.

Charlie-
I went into the control panel and the Java that is there is Java Runtime
Environment 6 from Nov.2006
There is no other Java on my programs where you add and remove.
What should I do? If I disable Java, will that hurt anything else running on
my computer?
The only updates on my computer are Microsoft.

The only add-ons on my Internet Explorer are Sun Java console. What do I do?

I removed Microsoft Live Care and do NOT have any anti-spyware on the
computer.I am only using McAfee for antivirus and firewall....
which add-ons should I disable as none listed are marked pogo..there is only
ONE Java and I said just above what is on the computer.

Should I add antispyware ( like Spybot ) or which one do you suggest?

If I do a system restore, will that remove any of my folders or emails that
I have gotten ?

Thanks - I do NOT want to do a re-install as the computer is from Toshiba
and not a retail version of Win Vista Home Premium.

ALso I keep disbaling Yahoo IM and MSN IM for start up and once I use them,
they continue to Pop up on start up..How can I stop that?
