When launching ANY ppt, it launches within Powerpoint 2003, SP2 fine. But
when trying to run any powerpoint presentation as a slideshow, it just shows
minimized on the taskbar. It is nowhere to be found on the screen and I am
unable to right-click and get any menu to maximize, etc. I have tried
renaming it as a .pps, no change. Any suggestions?

Luc,
Thanks for the FAQ info, however, this does not help me. I am running the
slideshow on my laptop each time, not connected to any peripheral to project
it anywhere (there is no monitor 2 and my software is already set to Primary
Monitor on hte "Multiple monitors" section of the Set Up Show menu.

Unfortunately, no. I am running the slideshow on my laptop with no
peripherals and the setting is set to primary monitor.

That's weird because what you describe is exactly what happens when you have
the set up luc mentioned.

If you press alt+tab repeatedly what do you see running? (can you see the
slide show?)

Is presenter view ticked?

Maybe try notching back video accelleration though I've never seen such an
extreme problem

Did that answer the question / help?

This should get it sorted out for you:

Can't run slideshow / screen show won't start; Icon appears on task bar
http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00426.htm

I know! Too weird. I can hear the music that goes with the slide show when
I start it, but that is it and when I alt tab off of it, then the music
stops. I have to go into my task manager to end task on the ppt and when I
do this, of course it also closes the slide show window (which shows as a
different task on the task bar but not in task manager.)

When presenter view is selected I can view the slides similarly to when I am
viewing it as a ppt versus a pps.

Can you guide me through slowing down the video acceleration? Keep in mind
this happens to ANY ppt I am trying to watch, regardless of who created it
originally.

I would make sure that all the updates for 2003 have been installed, If that
does not work I would try Detect and Repair to see if that might help. You
might also do a search for *.pcb, delete it. PowerPoint will create a new
one the next time it starts up.

Michael,

Tried all 3 suggestions - no difference. I have all the latest updates for
2003, I tried deleting the *.pcb file and I ran a detect and repair. Arrggg.
Any other suggestions?

Theresa

John,

Lowered to the lowest and then second lowest, still same. :(n It is almost
like it is somewhere out of my view; however, I have had experience with
other apps doing that in the past and know how to correct this and nothing I
am doing corrects this...I am at a total loss here!

Theresa

Out of curiosity... If you right click your desktop and select properties,
then go to the Settings tab, does it show one monitor or two? Further, if
you do an identify, does your laptop monitor show as number one or number
two? I have seen things get confused enough that the laptop thinks the
second display is still there and still primary, even though it really
isn't.

Please see Luc's same suggestion and my reply...this does not assist. Thank
you.

What happens if you simply start PowerPoint from the Start menu on the task bar
(that is, don't click on a PowerPoint show file to start up)?

For that matter, what happens if you doubleclick a PPT file instead of a
PPS/Show file?

If you still get the icon on the task bar and nothing else, it could be because
you've had the computer hooked up to multiple monitors at some point and
dragged the PowerPoint application itself to the second monitor.

In that case, start PowerPoint, press Alt+Spacebar then press M then hold down
the left arrow key to move the PPT window back to the left onto the main
monitor.

Kathy,

When I go to the settings tab, there are 3 monitor icons, numbered 1, 2 and
3. the one with the 1 on it shows as the primary and shows "attached" and
"primary" when I right click on it. I have never had any other monitors or
video peripherals attached to this laptop.

Theresa

Steve,

Whether I launch the app first and then the ppt or pps or just open the ppt
or pps and let it launch the app, the same results. This is a laptop that
has never been connected to any other monitors or video peripherals and when
I go into the settings for the display properties, there are 3 monitor
options with the one labeled "1" highlighted. When I right click on it, it
shows as "attached" and "primary".

Theresa

Kathy and all,

You got me digging and this issue is now resolved! I went in and unchecked
"attached" next to the 2nd and 3rd monitor icons under the settings tab
within display properties. Even though they were not showing as the
primary, they were somehow still interfering! Now my slide shows work
properly. Thanks to everyone for your input! There really is power in
numbers!!!

Sincerely,
Theresa

Glad you got it sorted!

Now for the obvious bad pun... There is power in numbers.. In this case
enough in that little 2 and that little 3 to steal you presentations away
from you
:)
