Getting a powerpoint file from a server

Just got new computer with windows XP. The problem is
when I log onto another server to retrieve the powerpoint
files all I see is a red x instead of a powerpoint file.
(or word or excel file) Do I need to set or reset
something in windows xp?

When do you see the x? In the file open dialog, or in Ppt/Word?

I see an x where the powerpoint/word or excel icon should
be. Before I would double click on the icon and the file
would open or download.

Is the server an FTP site or something? What if you save the file to
your harddrive and then attempt to open it via a double-click? Does it
work then?

If not, it could be that your file associations have become messed up.
Oh, I guess the other problem could be that Office (PPT and Excel,
anyway) hasn't been installed on the new computer. Windows XP by itself
won't open PPT or Excel files.
 
The server is not a FTP site - They post information and I
can go retrieve the files and save on my hard drive

I cant save the file to my hard drive (which is what I did
before) because I cant even get the file icon to appear.

I have the MS office XP - but I do think it has something
with the other server not being compatible with XP
javascript.

Where do you see the 'X'? Is it when you open the 'My Network Places'
icon that is on the desktop (and then open the relevant server)?
Because, that would be the easiest way to copy the file from the server
to your local desktop. Or is the 'X' part of some other procedure?

Can you run the PowerPoint directly on your computer? If so, can you
save a presentation? Then, from the Windows desktop, open the folder
that contains the saved presentation. What kind of icon do you see?
