Getting a headset working

This is kind of a weird problem. I have a headset with two mini-jack
connectors, audio and mic. The only problem is my headphones-out line is
on the control box of my speakers, which is far away from the mic-in jack,
which is on my soundcard on the back of my computer. The cable from the
headset doesn't split into the two different jacks early enough to allow it
to reach both :-/

I do have two sound cards, one is the Audigy 2 ZS and the other is built in
to the mobo. I think the audio quality of the latter one is probably not
as good though, and how would I go about telling my system to switch which
device to use to output the sound? That might make it ugly, having to have
two separate sound drivers installed and loaded.

Anyway, what should I do? Could I just get some sort of minijack extension
cord that allows me to extend the mic-in jack on the Audigy over to the
control box for the speakers? This is kind of a silly problem, I must
admit.

Buy the extension cord.

Do you *need* to leave the headset plugged in constantly?

Do you *need* to leave the speakers plugged in constantly?

Do you *need* to have output through both simultaneously?

Can we assume that when (anything) is plugged into the
speaker jack, it cuts out the speakers?

Some applications allow selecting the audio device when
there is more than one intalled. Others just use the system
default, no option to change it. When it uses the system
default it can be changed in Control Panel -> Sounds &
Multimedia (may be worked slightly different, or quite
different, you didnt' mention the OS so I assume windows).

It's possible to have a problem but usually works fine, I've
done it for years as I can't stand onboard sound for most
uses but figure I may as well leave it enabled unless I have
reason to disable.

Yes, that's about the easiest and cheapest solution without
having to continually, manually (through the operating
system) switch back and forth between the two sound devices
and their respective output jacks.

Yeah I guess I'll just get the extension cord. It shouldn't cost too much
and being able to switch between speakers and headset at a press of the
button on the speaker control box is much more convenient than having to
tell the OS to switch output sound cards
