Hi ya,

I bought a used 'puter with XP pro pre-installed. It's legit and I activated
it but it didn't come with the CD for the OS. How do I get it or make it?

Cheers,

L.

You can't make it. Short of buying one, you can get it only from your
vendor, but many OEM vendors just won't supply it.

OEM vendors are required by their agreement with Microsoft to give you a
means of reinstalling, should it be necessary. They can do this in one of
three ways:

1. An OEM copy of Windows
2. A restore CD
3. A hidden partition on your drive, with restore information.

If you don't have 1 or 2, you should have 3, but you should contact your
vendor to find out.

Personally, I find both 2 and 3 unacceptable (especially 3; a hard drive
crash can leave you with nothing), and would never choose to buy a computer
that came with an operating system unless I got a complete generic
installation CD for that operating system.

Preinstalled OEM versions of Windows XP are required
to be supported by the computer manufacturer. Contact
the computer manufacturer and order their reinstallation
or restore version of Windows XP.

They may be "required" to do so, but many are starting to say that even a
restore CD is no longer available for an older machine, or so sad, to bad,
we only support hardware when the PC is over X old. Even some of the better
knowns have come back with this sort of answer on PC's that are not very
old..

One of the OEMs with just the opposite attitude in my experience is HP.
While not happy with the reliability of some of the past laptop models, I'd
have to say that the support for software has been better than average.
