I currently have broadband on my desktop pc via Virgin media. My friend is going to borrow me his laptop. However, i was wondering to get that connected to my internet, will i need to buy additional hardware etc? Will i need a disc to load it etc?

sorry, not good at this stuff

You would be best of buying a router . Then you do not need to instal any software on the laptop apart from its OS .

The above is a guide for a "modem router" but you could just use a "router" as you already have a "modem" .

If you don't want to use the interent at the same time as your mate (i.e 2 laptops at once), then you can just plug it into the ethernet port on the laptop.

If you use the USB cable then you will have to install the software onto it with the NTL disk, but ethernet is better than USB, and it will work automatically with no software.

So, I could go somewhere like pc world, buy a router and then would that then connect to my pc first in order for my laptop to detect it and start using broadband or what?

Yes . :thumb: The link I gave has loads of relevant info .

I'm using a BTVoyager 220V its a 2 port router and modem . It works realy well and it cost me nought . :thumb:

Hold on a minute, are we talking Virgin cable? If so then a standard ADSL router will not work with cable. You will need a cable router. That iirc you plug the virgin box into the router and the pcs into the router.

So it goes as follows, cable line > Virgin box > Router > PC.

:)

confused slightly.

Yes, it is Virgin Media broadband (formerly NTL Cable).

Does this mean i just need a router that works with a cable set top.

Is this connected differently in any way to the others?

No it just means you have to make sure you buy a Cable router, and not an ADSL one, as it wouldn't work :)
