i just downloaded windows vista about a month ago and my computer started to
run slower and alot of the programs that came with my pc were not compatible
with vista. i had windows xp home edition previously. i want to go back to xp
but im not sure how to do so. i want to take out windows vista and i tried a
system recovery but it does not work. i have an hp pavilion pc. any
suggestions on how to fix this problem?

Hi,

You may need to contact HP for instructions on how to access the recovery
partition they usually ship with, as when you installed Vista the mbr was
overwritten with new boot code. Basically, what you are going to have to do
is wipe the machine out and start with a clean installation of XP Home.
There is no uninstalling it, nor can you overwrite it with an XP install.
Installing Vista was a one-way street and removal generally means a clean
reload, as was very carefully outlined at the prerelease download site.

Hi;

I had the same problem installing on a Dell Notebook, with Ready for Vista
sticker, after installing candidate relese, was a one way strret, had to to
start from zero, dont, pls dont install it unless Microsoft provides personal
help, soory to say. Installation source was DVD received from Microsoft

Assuming you did not wipe out the HP restore partition by doing a
reformat of the entire disk, during the splash screen with the HP logo
at system start-up, there should be a function key (not sure which) to
press and it will take you to the factory XP install. Select complete
PC restore and it will format the system partition and restore your
PC to the original configuration from the restore partition.

Or, if you made restore DVDs when you received the PC, go into
the BIOS and set to boot from DVD first, insert 1st DVD, restart
your PC, press any key to boot from the DVD when prompted
and select a full system restore.

It might take an hour and a half or so.

Hi,

The problem is that the function key used to invoke the recovery partition
won't work because the non-standard mbr that allowed it has been overwritten
to point to Vista's bootloader. This has been a problem for a number of
people, as most did not create the recommended recovery disks when they
purchased their systems.

Wonder if he did an upgrade install of Vista and migrated his
XP programs (have only done classic clean installs here), then
maybe he can try to make recovery disks now.

If not, then he can go to HP's site and order the disks online.
They are not that expensive.

The disks won't help. The resolution is a tool for retoring the mbr. This
comes from the vendor.

How about booting from a DOS disk and using c:\fdisk /mbr?

If he had a standard XP Home cd then he would have already been able to
reinstall, but it doesn't sound that way. Without a bootable copy of
Windows it doesn't matter if he fixes the mbr. He probably needs to start
the restoration with an F11 or F12 during post up. The code that enables
the function key is in the factory installed mbr which he appears to have
wiped out. If this is the case he needs a tool that rewrites the mbr to
renable the function key.
