Get my old IP's out of the WINS 1C record?

I would really prefer not to have to delete and "nbtstat -RR" all the live
DC's every single time I retire a domain controller. I don't think I can
really afford any downtime at all for the 1c records as it is continuously
being queried. Is there any way to edit the record to remove specific IP's?
Can I edit the WINS database?

If you shut the DCs down properly, they should be unregistering
automatically. I did this in a relatively large environment (~400 Domain
Controllers) and it worked fine in NT4 and in W2K WINS.

Other than that, no you can't delete a single IP out of a group record
and you can't edit the Jet Database. I would recommend setting up a
script that sends the delete request and then sends a nbtstat -RR
command to the DCs right after.

Quite honestly, unless a majority of your systems are running now
unsupported revs of Windows OSes or you are using non-MSFT OSes that are
dependent on WINS, you really shouldn't have much of an issue. Most all
domain specific queries should be going to DNS.

Hi Joe,

I guess I'm most concerned because we're still on AD2000/Exchange2000 (and a
lot of SQL 2000) and I understand that Ex2000 and SQL2000 need WINS. My
thought is that EX2000 is continually making queries to the WINS 1c record
and that if I delete that record, even for a millisecond, that something
will break that will require manual intervention to fix.

It appears, however, that there is no other way.

Exchange 2000 doesn't use WINS that much, the last time I did a net
trace of it, E2K primarily used WINS during configuration events like
setting up RUS servers, etc.

It is very easy to determine how much use there is for a given machine
or if you have a few WINS servers for a given WINS Server. Simply set up
wireshark or netmon and capture the traffic and look at the WINS requests.

I have deleted lots of 1c records and repopulated them in seconds and
things have always worked out fine.
