Hi everybody,

I currently work on a project that includes a generic tool for printer
administration (generic means device independant).
This tool must show the printer status: level of ink in toner, level of
papers in the different trays,...
I have seen that some printer can be controled by snmp protocol or by
embeded web servers.

Is there a generic solution to get informations from a printer?
Do such tool (free or commercial) already exist?

Any helps or ideas will be great!

I'm not sure how it can be done, I am using two printers which tell me
in different methods when they are out of toner/paper, that is the only
level information that it provides, unless I physically open the cover
and peer in.

I have found some interesting things. There are other protocols allow us
to get status of printer:
IPP: Internet Printing Protocol
JetDirect: a protocol made by HP
