get contacts from a distribution list

How do I (programatically) get phone numbers from all recipients in a
distribution list?

I know a distribution list only contains recipients, not ContactItems. But
users can select a recipient in a distribution list in outlook and get the
info of the ContactItem, how does Outlook do it?

I'm using outlook 2003.

And if the AddressEntry's email address doesn't exists in the contact list
at all, should I use directory services (ldap query) to look up the users
info? How does Outlook do it?

I don't know how Outlook's doing it. You can try Redemption
(www.dimastr.com), which offers the GetContact function also for earlier
versions of Outlook.
