get blue screen 3/4 through sp2 upgrade on sys with sp2 already

heya, pc was having different issues after installing codecs which weren't
for xp pro but for vista (i know, crazy but i had had a couple of drinks and
was rather confident of my abilities). after chucking in my xp pro sp2 cd and
selecting "install" it came up with a tab saying "upgrade" recommended. i
thought it would leave all my files untouched, put the neccessary ones over
the bad ones and the files that were newer then the cd it would leave alone.
But it starts up gets halfway through installing device drivers then i get a
blue screen with one of those x0000e6 kind of things which change each time
it restarts the "upgrade". i've even installed xp on the second hardrive and
tried to copy over some of those files into the c:\ drive but no matter what
i do or erase it keeps kicking into "upgrade setup restarting....." please
can anyone help, i know my language isn't the greatest in computer tech talk
but hopefully someone out there understands what the hell i've done

Back up your data and do a clean install of whatever operating system
you want. I can't figure out from your post whether you want to go back
to XP or go to Vista. You can do a "clean" install of Vista with the
upgrade disk. Just Google "clean install Vista upgrade".

Awesome a response, i haven't posted anything before so wasn't sure how much
to write. ok i had xp pro and have been doing the hotfix updates that come
from microsoft etc etc. but after recently downloading file conversion
programs for my psp some of the programs were telling me that i didn't have
the right codecs for the job. so i became interested in getting the correct
codecs.
Now the vista thing was a silly error, a friend said he had download some
file that was supposed to contain all the xp and vista codecs that one would
need, however they were all for vista and from then on i was trying to back
track. so i've never actually had vista installed and am happy with xp.
i was having trouble uninstalling the codecs, the pc was freezing up and
just behaving oddly. and thats when after trying to restore the registry with
Registry Mechanic from PC magazine which seemed like it didn't do anything, i
thought maybe my xp cd could help.
but when i tried booting from the cd to go into recovery console it doesn't
have that option, the only thing that happens if i keep pressing r is it asks
for a floppy which i don't have. so the next thing i tried was the "upgrade"
feature which the way i understood it was going to fix up the things that had
gone slightly askew and leave the system updates that were newer. but because
it keeps going to the blue screen half way through the process i don't think
i can actually do a backup.
when i boot of the other hard drive to see if i can then save some of my
files, it says "access denied" whenever i try to get into "My Documents" on
the c:\.
So there is my story, sorry its so long winded but any help would be greatly
appreciated.
