gerry-rig front USB connection?

I have an Antec case with an ASUS P4PE mb. There are two front-mounted
female USB ports on the Antec case but I have used the only USB header
on the MB for additional ports in the rear.

With the front USB ports are nine wires, 2 each for 5 volts, D-, and D+
with 3 ground connections (one of the connections actually has 2 wires
in the connector) so that there are 5 connectors for port 1 and 4
connectors for port 2.

Does anyone make a harness that I could attach these wires to and run
them off of hub or one of the ports in the back of the case?

Thanks

get an addon card with ports out the back and a header on the card
Ah-hah! I didn't realize they made them. Is that how one can add a
front module that has USB and other goodies on it? Any recommendations?

To be perfectly honest, I removed the connector of the PCI USB card that
uses the only USB header on the ASUS mb, triple-checked that they were
connected per the manual, and when I connected anything to the USB
ports, I received the Win2000/XP warning that I had improperly
DIS-connected a USB device...! So I am wondering if the front USB wires
are even marked correctly... I know that the header on the mb works
because when I plug a device into one of the two on the PCI card, it
works without any problem...

Thanks

most likely 180 round the wrong way. which manual?, the case or the MB? If
you used the mbs manual, I would think that you would have gotten it right.
double check and don't plug devices into them until your certain.

The ASUS manual is quite clear. According to what I have read, the
connector is an Intel connector with 5 pins in one row and 4 on the other.
xxxxx
xxxx
The row with 4 begins (l to r) pwr d- d+ gnd No connection
The row with 5 begins (l to r) pwr d- d+ gnd

I swapped the extra ground on the set labeled "1" and that did nothing.
The only thing I did not do was to change the wires from top set to
bottom set and vice versa, but I can't believe that would do anything.

We will see...

Check out these guys -- I'm using their drive-bay customizable
connector setups on two boxes. They have both internal-to-front
and rear-to-front connectors. Careful reading of their pages will
make clear what I mean. They also have connectors for other stuff
like FireWire and audio. And you might get free shipping -- I
did, probably because I spent over $50.

That IS a cool product. It seems to be the easiest solution, although
I would like to use the header on the mb just for the challenge of it..

Once more: they have parts for interior connections (your header) *as
well as* exterior connections. Again: "Careful reading of their pages"
is recommended.

I like their way of using modular design to customize as needed.

IT's both brilliant and well executed. Each of my two boxes have
differently-configured frontX panels.

As for execution, I don't know of anything that better ullustrates it
than this: Their external connectors run from the backplane to the
drive bay insert. To make that more clear, I'll illustrate with my own
case (no pun intended <g>). With one of my systemss, I'm running USB to
the front via USB jacks on the backplane. FrontX's external connectors
come with their own backplane slot covers, and they have a cutout for
you to feed your cable back into the computer case for running to the
front panel modular. So for dust and RFI you don't have to have a
completely open slot; you have it mostly closed with the FrontX cover.
A little thing? Sure. But it's the little things that make the
difference between slick and kludge.
