It seems that there is also a free english version :
http://www.bitdefender.com/bd/site/products.php?p_id=24

We often have feedback from AVG, AntiVir or Avast users : anyone
using BitDefender and having found some good/bad points ?

I've never tried out the Windows version, but you might be interested
in this recent detection test (professional versions):

As you can see, it scored higher than AntiVir and Avast.

Thanks for the link Art ; I only knew about the following site for
antivirus comparisons but it has apparently been asleep for a while
: http://www.av-test.org

BitDefender looks indeed better than Antivir and Avast, especially
in trojan detection. The dialer detection looks a little weak
though.

I wonder :
- what the differences are between free and pro versions of Antivir,
BitDefender and Avast
- why AVG (either free (v6) or pro (v7)) has not been tested.

I suppose you can contact Andreas Clementi directly to see if he can
answer your questions. I've never seen AVG compare favorably to the
others, with the exception of sometimes detecting 100% of the ITW
viruses used in a test. And also, I wouldn't expect that there are any
differences between the free and pro versions in terms of raw
detection rates since the same scan engines are used, presumably.

It only offers an on-demand scanner, no on-access scanning in
the freeware version.

The full version 6.5 was recommended by the German C'T magazine last year.
I use it and it always tells me my PC is clean, except for the EICAR test
virus that I leave on my HD for reference.
One feature that I like is that BitDefender can scan any type of archive.
Zip, rar, ace, imp, the works. AFAIK it's the only AV scanner that does
that.

I think Kaspersky is very good with archives too.
