can anyone discuss the pros & cons of using generic laptop memory?

for my toshiba satellite pro 6100 , toshiba heavily pushes Kingston on their
website store .... and if you call their techs, they also tell you that
Kingston is recommended if you wan't guaranteed recognition & performance.

however, they do admit that generic "should" work -- but is not guaranteed &
tested to work.

what are the differences between generic & Kingston for this type of laptop
memory ? where can i find out more ?

If you want to keep your warranty happy it is best to use what they push!
Otherwise they could use it as an issue to deny warranty coverage.

Hi

Kingston is a great name in the ramchips industries and would provide life time warranty on most of their products
I never use unamed ram chips and I also use Kingston products on my PCs
For today, Samzung ram chips is another choice

Right ... but I wonder where the RAM chips are manufactured ... maybe
Kingston is just buying the same RAM chips as are sold generically and then
branding them. I don't think Kingston is involved in the FAB business, so
unless they have other companies make the chips to their specifications they
must be buying standard chips. It seems unlikely that they are having
custom runs done because of the massive volume that would be required to
justify the additional production cost. I don't think they have massive
volume because the replacement market is much smaller than the original
equipment market.
