Generic Host Services Error Message

Anytime I'm using Windows OS for ANYTHING (Explorer, IE,
FTP, Camera and Scanner Wizard), I'm getting a Generic Host
Services Error Message, and the task fails. The PC does NOT
crash, and I've scanned for Blaster, and applied Blaster
fixes, in case that was it. So far, nothing.

Additional information in the error references wiaservc.dll

Any ideas?

Help greatly appreciated, since the though of wiping and
reinstalling XP makes me want to run for Linux.
