My zonealarm firewall blocked a programme and displayed
this message:
'Do you want to allow Generic Host Processor for Win32
Services to act as a server?'
Do I allow it or block it? What is Generic Host
Processor? what does it mean to 'act as server'?. Thanks

A Description of Svchost.exe in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q314056

Do you have WinXP configured to automatically check for updates,
and how often? Do you have WinXP configured to synchronize its system
time with an atomic clock, and how often? Both of these activities,
and others, would require Internet access. In general, though, there
should be no need for the Generic Host Process to act as a "server."
I'd deny it permission to do so.

In that case, do you know why why ZA would alert on it trying to do exactly
that?

I used to get that warning a lot in ZoneAlarm, but not any more. I went to
the Zone Alarm User Forum (where people should go with Zone Alarm
questions), and they told me to add my DNS servers to my ZA Trusted Zone,
and change Block/Ask to Allow beside Generic Host Process, under Trusted
Server, on the Program Tab of Program Control. Now I don't get that warning
any more. To get the values of your DNS servers, type the following at a
command prompt:
ipconfig /all
