Generic Host Process Error

I have been getting the "Generic Host Process . . ." message for a while and
have attempted to solve it by implementing the hot fixes provided by
Microsoft. However, now I still get the error and regardless of the option I
choose (send report, don't send report, or debug) The machine immediately
hangs. I cannot get a response to Ctrl+ALT+Del, or any other sequence of keys
other than power off. As long as I leave the message on the display and don't
answer it I continue to run. Can anybody suggest how I solve this problem?
I'm getting tired of running with the error message on the display all the
time . . .

The machine is a DELL 4700 3.4gHz with 3GB memory running XP SP2 + fixes up
to about 2 weeks ago.

Apparently Automatic Update is involved because one of the hot fixes I have
not been able to implement renames a bunch of auto Update DLLs among other
actions.

While you still have a workable system, take backups of your data. Then do
the big "format" in the sky and rebuild your system. It's a lot faster than
spinning your wheels.

I'm afraid that solution is a little more drastic than I'm willing to try at
the moment. I finally found Article 931852 and have tried its solution since
the last time I re-booted I got a different instance of the error that
matched the article's symptoms. It took a a re-boot after the 'net stop' to
make it happen because the Software Distribution directory and at least one
of the files that was to be renamed was still held by someone until after I
re-booted. Then after applying the fix and re-booting, I have not yet gotten
the error again in the last couple of hours. We'll see we we'll see, I guess.

Where this all leaves my system with regards to future updates et al I don't
know but I magine that I will ahve to restart Automatic updates to see. Oh,
well, such is the cost of doing Windoes, I guess. It sure isn't like g0od
ole' mainframe software (z/OS for example).

Thanks for the update. You have somewhat expressed my trepidation. Even
though you may have resolved your immediate problem, it's a question of the
state of the OS. What has been damaged and will future problems arise? I
find that under these circumstances I tend to lean toward a fresh install vs
a repair. Also, I have spent hours in the past trying to repair an almost
dead OS. I regretted not biting the bullet and reinstalling. In the long
run it would have been faster. But I did learn a lot!
