Hi people,

I've found myself working in an environment where there is currently no
directory service. No AD, no LDAP, eo eDirectory, no NT domain, nothing.

We've got about 180 windows XP PCs all in one workgroup, with a few Macs
thrown in for good measure with about 200 staff, across two sites which
share one bridged subnet. As you can imagine, administering this lot
without the proper tools can be kinda tricky. This week I've been flat
out going round each machine to see if they need an update to an Oracle
app - it would have taken me about 5 minutes with Group Policy or Zenworks.

Sooo, as I've worked with both AD and eDirectory in the past, I'd like
to introduce one or other here. However, the need is so obvious to me
that I'm having difficulty putting it into words.

Has anyone any experience of selling to management the need for a
Directory service? At the moment generic arguments are what I'm looking
for - I'll get to the product details at the next stage hopefully!

Many thanks,

IM

One word - SECURITY

I'm guessing this setup is so insecure and open for hacking, virus', worms,
etc... How could a modern enterprise not run a centralized environment.

In addition to security as Paul pointed out, you should be able to pretty
easily quantify your management savings using examples like the one you
provided.
